immediate reopening... good or bad
States should not reopen immediately. Although not everyone may agree with this statement it is best
for everyone's health and safety. Jeffery Shaman, a leading epidemiologist at Columbia University
says, "The math is unfortunately pretty simple. It's not a matter of whether infections will
increase but by how much." He is saying that the number of people who get the disease will
definitely increase but what they have to figure out is how much will they increase by. Dr. David
Relman, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Standford University of Medicine says,
"I'm very concerned that they are making these decisions in a rushed manner, on the basis of hopes
and dreams, rather than the cold, hard reality." Dr. Relman thinks states are opening up because that is
what the people want but it is not what is right. If states reopen too quickly the number of cases of
the virus will increase and this will jeopardize our health and safety.
States should be allowed to reopen immediately. If states are able to reopen immediately it will help
people in many different ways. If safety procedures can be followed than places should be able to
reopen. In the article " After Delay, CDC Releases New Guidance on How States Can Reopen
Safely" it says, "if a restaurant can answer yes to several questions -such as whether its prepared to
encourage social distancing among patrons and encourage flexible leave among employees- then it
could reopen safely." If places agree to follow safety guidelines people believe it is safe to reopen. In
the article "Reopening States Before June Would Save Millions of Jobs But Result In Hundreds of
Thousands More Coronavirus Deaths" it says, "If states keep lockdowns in place through
June, about 18.6 million more jobs would be lost, PWBM projects. U.S. GDP by that point
would fall to almost 12% lower than it was a years prior. If states are even able to reopen partially it
will save millions of jobs.
