China one child policy

  1. According to the article, what is the official definition of the one child policy?
The purpose of which was to limit the great majority of family units in the country to one child each.

  1. Who created the program and at what specific date(s) was it implemented?

It was implemented September 25, 1980 by Deng Xiaoping.

  1. How was the program enforced and were there any exceptions to the one child per family policy?

Some exceptions were made to people if their firstborn was handicapped or to some parents within ethnic minority groups. The program was forced by making contraceptive methods widely available, offering financial incentive and employment opportunities for those who complied. People who went against the policy would be forced to have an abortion and sterilization.

  1. Explain the three problems and consequences associated with the one child policy and its implementation in China.

The first problem was the sex ratio became skewed towards males. There were roughly between 3 and 4% more males than females. Families preferred males over females which caused orphanages to overflow with girls and women to get abortions. Over time the females decreased so much there were a limited number of girls to marry.
The second problem was a growing portion of elderly people. Elder citizens relied on the young to support them but with so little young kids the elder were having a harder time being supported.
The third problem was people who had more than one child had to keep the other children hidden and undocumented. This caused the children to be uneducated and unemployed.

  1. Watch: Why did China end it’s one child policy?
It was causing too many problems and there were not enough women to keep producing babies because families were giving up girls because they did not think girls could do what they wanted them to do in the future.
