Why are nation-states difficult to create?

1. Define nation-state. Describe the development of "states" from ancient states, medieval states, to modern states.
A nation state is a territory occupied by ethnicity. The first states emerged in ancient times and were very unorganized and controlled by empires. The first modern state was developed in Europe. 
2.  Using figures 8-9, 8-10, and 8-11 compare the maps of Europe and identify the major changes that occur to organized territories from 1300-1924. 
From 1300-1800 there was a large decrease in empires. From 1800 to 1924 there was an increase in empires/ nation-states. 
3.What is the concept of self-determination? Why is it difficult to create a true "nation-state"?
People have some kind of control that is more than just the government level. 
4. Describe the differences between a multiethnic state and a multinational state. Which region of the world is the most ethnically diverse? Which region of the world is the least diverse?
A multiethnic state has more than one ethnicity and a multinational state has more than one ethnicity with self-determination. Russia is the most ethnically diverse and 
5. Discuss the issues and challenges in creating nation states in the territories of the former Soviet Union.
The 15 states that the soviet union was made up of is now divided into 5 groups. 
6. Define colonialism and explain the concept of colonies. Describe their current distribution around the world. Using figure 8-24, which European countries controlled the most territory around the world (top 3)
Colonialism is an effort by one country to establish settlements in a territory and to impose its political, economic and cultural principles on that territory.
