Global Food Trade

1.) Explain the contribution of expanding exports to the world food supply. Using figure 9-51, describe the impact of globalization on agricultural exports. What dilemma exists in developing countries who participate in growing export crops?
Exporting countries benefit from the revenues, and importing countries meet the food needs of their people. Seen is figure 9-51 the food exports in trillion dollars has increased rapidly. The dilemma that exists in developing countries is the more land that is devoted to growing export crops, the less land there is to grow crops for domestic consumption. Rather than help to increase productivity, the funds generated through the sale of export crops may be needed to feed the people who switched from subsistence farming to growing export crops.
2.) The global food chain has been rocked by the Covid-19 Pandemic but its not for lack of food. Read the article "Covid-19 could threaten global food supply"  and describe how the virus is disrupting the global food chain. Share your experience: Have you visited a grocery store lately? What was your experience (If not, ask a parent)? Were there items that you normally get that were unavailable?
With the border closures and movement restrictions it is harder to transport goods internationally which can have an effect on the global food chain. Planes and ports have also been closed so food and medicines have been stranded. With lots of businesses being shut down the disruptions are threatening to cut off supply chains and increase food insecurity. I have been to a grocery store and target and it is either chaotic and there are a ton of people there or there is no one there. There were a lot of items that were unavailable like toilet paper and specific brands of items my family likes.
3.) Describe the principles of organic farming. Is it important to you that the food you consume is organic? Does your family go out of its way to get local or organic food? Why or why not?
In organic farming, crops are grown without application of herbicides and pesticides to control weeds. GMO seeds are not used. Also in organic farming, animals consume crops grown on the farm and are not conflicted to small pens. Lastly in organic farming, antibodies are administered to animals only fro therapeutic purposes. It depends on what I am eating to say if it is important that the food I consume is organic. My family does not normally go out of our way to get organic or local food but if we have the choice of local or organic and the prices are not much higher we will go with organic. We do go out of our way to get organic fruits because they are healthier for us.
