answering frq part 1


  • every question is going to have a stimulus
  • a lot of topics are cross cutting
  • focus on units 1-5 content
  • don't panic, stay calm and tackle the questions bit by bit
  • take time to look at the data, look at the map and analyze the pictures
  • make sure to answer the question to the appropriate scale
  • as we write close the loop
  • write more than you think is necessary rather than writing too little
  • think about how you could get the reader to give you max point for each question
  • read prompt carefully
  • answer the task verb; describe, explain, compare
  • be as clear as possible
  • when told to compare also contrast
  • it is going to be like a mini frq
  • rubrics are very specific to the question
  • it has been designed to take up the whole time frame
  • if you don't get to address every part of the question it is okay
  • use the phrase "according to the data"
  • describe= give a detailed account including reasons or cause; provide the relevant characteristics of a specified topic
  • explain= give a detailed account including reasons or causes; provide information about how or why a relationship, pattern, position, situation or outcome occurs using evidence and/or reasoning
  • compare= give an account of the similarities or differences between two or more items or situations referring to both or all of them throughout
  • read statement carefully not just skim through it
  • have a piece of scratch paper with you
  • do not put answer in bulleted form
  • enumerate
  • don't provide off topic information
  • stick with the facts not personal opinions
  • always provide an example
  • give one example because only the first one is counted
  • be comfortable with how to read a map
