Who is credited with creating the name for the organization? How many countries were original member states of the organization? Franklin D. Roosevelt is credited with naming the UN. There were 50 original countries. 3.) How many member nations currently participate in the UN? The main bodies are general assembly, security council, economic and social council, trusteeship council, international court of justice, and secretariat.  The general assembly is made up off all countries and they discuss and work on a wide array of international issues. The security council has a primary responsibil...

Gerrymandering

I could not read the article because it was making me pay to read it. 1. Explain the concept of gerrymandering and the three ways that it is done (wasted, excess, stacked vote). Gerrymandering is the idea of shaping districts to benefit one political party or another. It is done in 3 ways; wasted vote, excess vote and stacked vote. A wasted vote is opposition supporters are spread across many districts but in the minority. An excess vote is opposition supporters are concentrated into a few districts. A stacked vote is distant areas of like minded voters are linked through oddly shaped boundaries.

Why do boundaries cause problems?

1.) Describe the differences among the three different regime types listed in the textbook (democracy, autocracy, anocracy) and provide examples for each. a democracy is a country in which citizens elect leaders and can run for office. ex- US an autocracy is a country that is run according to the interests of their ruler rather than the people. ex- pakistan an anocracy is a country that is not fully democratic or fully autocratic but displays a mix of the two types. ex- cambodia 2.) Using the map on figure 8-39, list which countries of the world are "full democracies". What region of the world appears to have the greatest concentration of autocratic regimes? united states, chile, australia, canada, denmark, ireland, sweeden, iceland, germany, spain northern hemisphere 3.) Using Table 8-1, compare Democracy and Autocracy.  democracy- citizens can express who they want as their leader, autocracy- leaders are chosen by rules of  succession democracy- there...

Why do boundaries cause conflicts?

Image
1.) Define boundary and frontier. Discuss the differences between the two and identify the three types of boundaries used in the study of Human Geography. A boundary is an invisible line marking territory. A frontier is a zone where no state has control. Physical, cultural and antecedent. If you are in a boundary you are under the control of something but no one has a control ina frontier.  2.) Ireland. Find a map that details the religious boundaries that exist in Ireland. Find another map that details the religious boundaries that exist in Northern Ireland.    3.) Israel. Find a map of Israel where you can see the ethnic boundaries that exist between Jews and Palestinians.   4.) Describe the different types of physical boundaries that exist between states AND use examples for each . Desert boundary is a desert that separates places Ex: Sahara Desert Mountain boundary is a mountain that separates places Ex: Andes Mountains Water boundary is a bo...

Why are nation-states difficult to create?

1. Define nation-state. Describe the development of "states" from ancient states, medieval states, to modern states. A nation state is a territory occupied by ethnicity. The first states emerged in ancient times and were very unorganized and controlled by empires. The first modern state was developed in Europe.  2.  Using figures 8-9, 8-10, and 8-11 compare the maps of Europe and identify the major changes that occur to organized territories from 1300-1924.  From 1300-1800 there was a large decrease in empires. From 1800 to 1924 there was an increase in empires/ nation-states.  3.What is the concept of self-determination? Why is it difficult to create a true "nation-state"? People have some kind of control that is more than just the government level.  4. Describe the differences between a multiethnic state and a multinational state. Which region of the world is the most ethnically diverse? Which region of the world is the least diverse? A mul...

Where are states distributed?

1.) Describe the differences between a state of the world and a state within the United States.  countries are called states and they have sovereignty  the 50 states are part of the nation or state of the united states 2.) Explain the concept of sovereignty. Describe the question of sovereignty in Korea (one state or two?), China and Taiwan (one state or two?), Senkayu/Diayou Islands (who is sovereign?), and Sahrawi Republic/Western Sahara (who is sovereign?)  Sovereignty is independence from control of internal affairs from outside states. We think of Korea as one state but it has been separated into 2 states. Taiwan is part of China but it claims to be its own country. Some people think of them as an independent country but others think they are still part of China.

Why does ethnic cleansing and genocide occur?

Image
Ethnic cleansing is a purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent and terror-inspiring means. Rivalries among ethnicities resurfaced in Yugoslavia. Because the ethnicity distribution did not match up well with the boundaries of the new countries the breakup of Yugoslavia was not done peacefully. https://www.icty.org/en/about/what-former-yugoslavia Ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and Herzegovina included murder, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, extra-judical executions, rape and sexual assaults. All of this happened because Bosnia and Herzegovina was ethnically diverse. The Serbs and Croats were fighting to see who would unite the portions of the republic that they inhabited.  Balkanized is defined as a small geographic area that could not successfully be organized into stable countries because it was inhabited by many ethicities with complex, long-standing antagonisms toward each other. Balkanization is defi...

Why might ethnicities face conflicts?

Nationality is defined as identity with a group of people who share legal attachment and personal allegiance to a particular country. Ethnicity is defined as identity with a group of people who share the cultural traditions of a particular homeland or hearth. Nationality in America includes those born in the US and those who immigrated and became citizens. Ethnicity in the United States identifies groups with distinct ancestry and culture like African Americans, Mexican Americans, Chinese Americans or Polish Americans. In the United Kingdom there is a conflict between the nationalities of the citizens. Should everyone be considered British or should there be 4 different nationalities. Nationalism is loyalty and devotion to a nationality. A centripetal force is an attitude that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state. Nationalism is an example of a centripetal force. Ethnicities can be divided between more than one nationality. For example the Kurds in Asia. The Kurds ...
